About Me

As a seasoned journalist and writer, I have covered the entertainment and digital media worlds as well as local and national news and travel and human-interest stories. I have experience as a storyteller in non-fiction programming with training in video editing software including Final Cut Pro and the Avid. I had a stint working as a story assistant on the Showtime documentary series “Time of Death.”

Currently, I’m a staff writer for Newsweek covering culture and religion and educational and entertainment topics. Prior to this position I served as a contributing writer for Forbes covering Hollywood and entertainment and the emergence of streaming video-on-demand content.

Carly Mayberry, Writer

Previously, I worked at The Hollywood Reporter where I developed multiple entertainment industry sources working first as a staff writer covering digital media and then film. I have also written for Variety, Studio System News, TechNewsDaily, the Ventura County Star and Reuters and taught writing as an adjunct professor at Biola University. That was while completing the Act One Producing & Executive Entertainment Program in Hollywood.

Outside of entertainment, I have covered community news including local and national government and prestigious events for the Monterey Herald including the Councours d’Elegance, the Pebble Beach Food & Wine and the AT&T Pro-Am Golf Tournament and the U.S. Open Championship. For the Southwestern Oregon Publishing Company I covered government and Native American issues of that region.

Before spending a decade in the Los Angeles area and then living on the Monterey Peninsula, I began my journalism career in Montana, where my first reporting job was at a weekly paper covering community affairs and Glacier National Park. The newsroom in which I worked was said to be the only one of its kind in the country, located inside a log cabin.

Moving from the mountains of Montana to the beaches of Southern California, I landed at a weekly in Hermosa Beach where I served as the Redondo Beach Editor. Still, I had time to return to Montana to complete my Master of Arts in journalism from the University of Montana after receiving the Kim Williams journalism fellowship.

I love the outdoors, nature, movies, mysteries, interior design, real estate, my dog Sutton and my family and friends. I have additional experience in blogging, photography, SEO and newspaper/magazine/newsletter page design/lay-out.
